‘I refused the pastor’s advances — then my life became a nightmare’ (Part 1)
When 38-year-old Esther Johnson (not her real name) joined the church nearly two decades ago, she believed she had found a spiritual home.
The mother of two was a devoted worker in the women’s fellowship, rarely missing services or church activities. Her husband was equally committed, and together they were regarded as one of the congregation’s exemplary families.
But what began as a place of worship gradually turned into the setting of a nightmare that would cost Esther her reputation, freedom and nearly her life.
Today, seated in the modest living room of a relative’s home, Esther recounts her ordeal with a mixture of pain, disbelief and resilience.
“It started with compliments,” she recalled.
“The pastor would tell me I was different from other women, that God had special plans for me. At first, I thought it was fatherly encouragement.”
According to Esther, the messages soon became more personal. Phone calls came late at night. Text messages became increasingly suggestive. Then came what she describes as a direct proposition.
“One day he told me he loved me and wanted a special relationship with me,” she said. “I reminded him that I was married and that he was my spiritual leader. I was shocked.”
Determined to protect her marriage, Esther rejected the overture and began avoiding private encounters with the cleric.
She never imagined the consequences.
Within weeks, she noticed a dramatic change in the attitude of church leaders. People who once embraced her warmly became cold and suspicious. Rumours began circulating among members.
“I suddenly became the villain,” she said. “People looked at me as if I had committed some terrible sin.”
The allegations escalated rapidly. Esther was accused of rebellion, gossip and attempting to undermine church authority.
Despite her denials, a disciplinary panel was convened.
“The verdict had already been written before I entered the room,” she said.
Not long afterwards, she was publicly excommunicated.
“I felt like I had been stripped naked before people I loved and respected.”
But worse was yet to come.
