Real-time transmission of election results possible, says Adegboye Council of Engineers chair
An Electrical and Electronics engineer and the 22nd President & Chairman-in-Council of the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Engr. (Dr.) Felix Adesola Adegboye has said that real-time transmission of election results is possible if the necessary things are put in place.
Speaking in an interview recently, Adegboye hinged his argument on the fact that Nigeria’s mobile broadband penetration, according to the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC), which was 44.43 per cent as of December 2024, with a total internet subscription of about 139 million, was expected to have increased two years after.
Considering that there is hardly any Local Government Area in Nigeria that is not connected to at least one mobile GSM and broadband service provider, it would be wrong to assume that real-time electronic transmission of election results nationwide in 2027 would be something difficult.
“Yes, it is possible, if the INEC BVAS machine can work seamlessly for a very long period of time and the same BVAS is to be used to send results to a dedicated server, all we require is infrastructure optimisation, cybersecurity readiness, server capacity, operational coordination, satellite communication, multi-network aggregation, and hybrid transmission models, which can address hard-to-reach areas,” Adegboye said.
While recognising that network limitations in rural areas all over the world are a legitimate technical concern, he, however, disclosed that available data show coverage has expanded significantly.
The President & Chairman-in-Council of the Nigerian Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, therefore, called for robust cybersecurity measures to curtail the activities of hackers.
“Technologically, it is feasible with the existing infrastructure, albeit with upgrades. Engineering solutions such as signal boosters, portable VSAT systems, satellite connectivity, and offline caching can bridge gaps,’ he argued.
