One confirmed dead in tanker accident
The Lagos State Emergency Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed one person dead in a lone accident that occurred in Lagos, yesterday.
According to an e-statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the accident occurred at Ekoro Road, Abule Egba, Lagos.
In a preliminary report by the agency, it received the report of the accident at about 7 PM on Friday.
“Upon arrival of the LASEMA Response Team (LRT) at the scene at 2004 hours, a petrol tanker laden with approximately 15,000 litres of Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) was involved in a lone accident at the above-mentioned location. The driver was not present at the scene.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the tanker reportedly suffered a mechanical fault, lost control, ran over a bystander, and crashed into a roadside shop, trapping a female teenager in the process,” the statement said.
It stated further that the incident claimed the life of a female bystander, while another female teenager (approximately 15 years old) was trapped in the incident.
On the action taken, the agency disclosed that traffic control measures were implemented to prevent secondary incidents.
The Agency’s Response Team also coordinated multi-agency efforts to ensure prompt rescue and recovery operations.
It was gathered that the deceased adult female was recovered and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further processing.
In addition, the trapped teenager was successfully rescued and transferred to LASAMBUS for immediate medical attention before being conveyed to the hospital.
At the time of writing this report, the tanker had been recovered from the affected building.
