Yari explodes over anti-government protest link, calls allegation dangerous

Published

on

Senator representing Zamfara West District, Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari, has denied financing protests against the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
This is contained in a statement signed by Yari’s Chief of Staff, Abdullahi Abdulkarim Tsafe.
Tsafe described the allegation as a laughable and entirely fabricated report.
Yari’s Chief of Staff stated that ordinarily, the Senator would have ignored what he described as ‘a baseless and ill-conceived allegation,’ but ‘the growing circulation of the falsehood and the need to set the record straight’ necessitated the response.
Part of the statement reads:
“The allegation is false, mischievous, politically motivated and exists only in the fertile imagination of those whose stock-in-trade is misinformation and character assassination.
“The question that naturally arises is simple: what possible motive would Senator Yari have to sponsor a protest against an administration he has consistently supported, defended and worked tirelessly to strengthen?
“Senator Yari’s relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is neither opportunistic nor transactional. It is a relationship built on mutual respect, political conviction and a shared commitment to the progress and stability of Nigeria.
“Long before it became fashionable to associate with the President, Senator Yari stood firmly in support of his presidential aspiration and invested enormous personal resources, political capital and goodwill towards the realisation of that project.
‘Indeed, President Tinubu himself has, on several occasions, publicly acknowledged Senator Yari’s loyalty, support and contributions to the success of the All Progressives Congress and the broader Renewed Hope agenda.
“It, therefore, defies logic and common sense that a man who has committed so much to the success of an administration would suddenly turn around to sponsor protests aimed at undermining that same government.”
Tsafe stated that those behind this malicious propaganda clearly underestimate the intelligence of Nigerians. “They believe that if a lie is repeated often enough, it will eventually acquire the appearance of truth. They are mistaken.”
He described Senator Yari as a statesman of considerable standing, who has never been associated with political frivolities, attention-seeking antics or underhanded schemes.
His political philosophy has always been rooted in dialogue, constructive engagement and democratic participation. He does not operate through faceless groups, shadowy campaigns or sponsored agitation.
“We are aware that as Senator Yari’s political profile continues to rise nationally, certain interests have become increasingly uncomfortable with his influence, his relationship with key stakeholders across the country and his unwavering support for President Tinubu.
“It is therefore not surprising that desperate attempts are being made to manufacture controversies where none exist.
“These recurring attacks reveal more about their sponsors than they do about Senator Yari. They expose a level of insecurity and desperation that should concern all well-meaning observers of our political landscape.
“We wish to assure Nigerians that Senator Yari remains fully committed to the success of President Tinubu’s administration and firmly believes that the challenges confronting the nation require collective effort, patience and constructive engagement rather than divisive propaganda and manufactured distractions.
“The Senator remains focused on his legislative responsibilities, the welfare of his constituents and the broader national interest. He will not be distracted by the antics of political merchants who thrive on falsehood and sensationalism,” the statement further stated.
Tsafe, therefore, urged members of the public to disregard the report in its entirety, and described it as false, malicious, and should be treated with the contempt it deserves.
“No amount of propaganda can alter the facts. No amount of mischief can diminish the longstanding relationship between Senator Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“And no amount of political blackmail will force Senator Yari away from the principles of loyalty, service and nation-building that have defined his public life,” the statement concluded.

Lagos indigenous people petition Sanwo-Olu over renaming of streets

Published

on

Jubril

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been asked to urgently halt the renaming of historic streets by the Executive Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government, Emilagba Kolawole Jubril, before it degenerates into crisis.

In a petition to the governor, titled, ‘Save Our Historic Street Names, a Petition for the Preservation of Lagos Heritage,’ by a group of Coalition of Indigenous Peoples of Lagos State, (COLIP), and signed by its Spokes person, Chief Adesunbo Onitiri, the group said the action of the Council was a dangerous attempt to erase very important heritages of Lagos State, particularly the indigenous peoples.

Part of the petition reads:
“The Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Peoples (COLIP) has received with great concern the announcement by the Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government, approving the renaming of a number of historic streets within the Local Government Area.

“While we have no objection whatsoever to recognising and honouring distinguished sons and daughters who have served their communities with dedication, we strongly object to doing so by erasing the historical identity of Lagos.

“Street names are far more than signposts. They are part of the living history of a city. They tell the story of how Lagos evolved and remind successive generations of the people and events that shaped our society.”

COLIP said the proposed renaming of Freeman Street, Glover Street and Jones Street raises profound historical and cultural questions.

“Henry Stanhope Freeman was the first Governor of the Lagos Colony following the Treaty of Cession in 1861. John Hawley Glover served as Governor of Lagos and established “Glover’s Hausas”, widely regarded as the foundation of today’s Nigerian Army.

“Dr. Curtis Adeniyi-Jones was one of Nigeria’s foremost medical pioneers, a distinguished nationalist, a co-founder of Nigeria’s first political party, and an outstanding public servant.

“Whether one agrees with every aspect of colonial history is beside the point,” the COLIP pointed out, stressing that History cannot simply be rewritten because contemporary politics finds it inconvenient.

“Every period of our history, whether glorious or controversial, forms part of the story of Lagos”, COLIP said.

According to COLIP, The world’s great cities understand this. London, Paris, Rome and many others have retained historic street names for centuries because they recognise that heritage is an asset, not an obstacle to development. Perhaps the finest example is Singapore.

“Although, Singapore has transformed itself into one of the world’s most technologically advanced and prosperous cities, it has carefully preserved its colonial buildings, historic districts, street names and cultural landmarks.

“Rather than demolishing or renaming its past, Singapore integrated its heritage into its future, creating one of the world’s leading tourist destinations and a city admired for respecting its history while embracing modernity.

“Lagos can and should do exactly the same. The Yaba, Ebute Metta and Oyingbo axis represents one of the most historically significant parts of Lagos.

“It is closely associated with the development of the Nigerian Railway system, which for decades, was the backbone of the nation’s transportation network, moving passengers, petroleum products and goods throughout Nigeria.”

COLIP, therefore opened that instead of preserving and celebrating this remarkable history, we appear determined to erase it.

“If today’s leaders wish to leave their own lasting legacy, there are far better ways of doing so.

“Let n featured roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, health centres, libraries, community centres, innovation hubs, sports facilities, digital learning centres and other public infrastructure bear their names after they have conceived, funded and delivered them,” COLIP stated.

It pointed out that History should never become the casualty of political expediency.

We must also ask a simple question. “If every administration renames streets to honour people of its choice, what prevents the next administration from changing them all over again?

“Where does it end? Lagos cannot continue to erase its past one street at a time.
“For several years there have been proposals to introduce Heritage Blue Plaques on the homes and buildings associated with distinguished Lagosians, similar to those found in many historic cities around the world.

“Such plaques celebrate achievement while preserving history. They do not destroy one legacy to create another.

“We therefore call upon the Executive Chairman of Lagos Mainland Local Government to immediately suspend the proposed renaming of these historic streets and to engage historians, traditional institutions, resident associations, professional bodies, indigenous Lagos organisations and other stakeholders before taking any further action.

“We respectfully call upon His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Lagos State, to intervene in this matter in the interest of preserving the rich historical and cultural heritage of Lagos.

“We urge His Excellency to direct that all proposals to rename streets of historical significance across Lagos State be suspended pending the development of a comprehensive Heritage Preservation Policy, prepared in consultation with historians, traditional institutions, professional bodies, indigenous Lagos organisations and other relevant stakeholders.

“We further call upon the governor to champion legislation establishing clear guidelines for the naming and renaming of streets, public buildings and landmarks, ensuring that places of historical significance cannot be altered arbitrarily by successive administrations.

“We also call upon the Lagos State House of Assembly to enact legislation protecting historic street names and other heritage assets so that the history of Lagos can never again be erased by administrative discretion”, the COLIP stated.

“Lagos is Nigeria’s former capital and one of Africa’s oldest and most historically significant cities. Its identity has been built over centuries.

“That identity belongs not only to those living today, but also to future generations who deserve to inherit the history that shaped their city. A society that loses its history gradually loses its identity.

“Let us honour today’s achievers by celebrating what they build today, not by removing the recognition earned by those who came before them.

“As the saying goes: ‘A man who is in a hurry to erase his past will not have much of a future, for he too will one day be erased by those who come after him.’

“Let us preserve the history of Lagos. Let us protect its identity. Let us leave future generations a city that remembers where it came from,” COLIP concluded.

LASEMA curtailing Bono Energy Terminal

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has confirmed that its swift emergency response and coordinated multi-agency intervention successfully prevented a fire from breaking out at the Bono Energy Terminal in the Coconut area of Apapa from escalating into a major disaster.

According to a statement by LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, “Following the receipt of a distress call on Friday, the Agency immediately activated the State’s Emergency Response Plans and deployed its Cobra, Tiger and Lion Response Teams to the scene.

“Upon arrival, responders discovered that the fire had engulfed a section of the energy terminal, posing a significant threat to adjoining fuel storage facilities and nearby industrial establishments.”

LASEMA immediately commenced containment operations in collaboration with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Federal Fire Service, security agencies, terminal operators and other emergency responders.

The agency stated further that through coordinated firefighting efforts, strategic cooling operations and strict enforcement of safety measures, the fire was prevented from spreading to other critical installations within the terminal.

“The prompt intervention of emergency responders significantly reduced the potential impact of the incident, averting what could have resulted in a large-scale industrial fire with severe consequences for lives, property and the environment,” the agency stated.

No casualty was recorded during the incident.

However, assessment of the extent of property damage and the cause of the fire is ongoing.

The LASEM PS thereby commended the professionalism, courage and synergy displayed by all responding agencies and personnel whose timely actions ensured the successful containment of the fire.

LASEMA also urged operators of facilities handling petroleum products and other hazardous materials to strictly adhere to safety protocols, carry out routine equipment maintenance, and maintain emergency preparedness measures to minimise the risk of similar incidents.

LASEMA also reassured Lagos residents of its unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives, property and the environment through prompt emergency response, effective inter-agency collaboration and continuous preparedness.
